Neil Valmonte is a Westport, CT-based solo artist and songwriter who has a way of writing about the unscripted parts of life. Working out of his basement studio, he builds these open-road rock sounds. What I like the most about him is that he doesn’t see his songs as finished products. For an artist chasing that big arena energy, that’s a surprisingly humble, cool thing to do.

“The Road I Didn’t Plan On” is Neil's second single has semi-acoustic strings and violas that sound incredibly gorgeous. The song has this almost relieved acknowledgment that maybe the detour was the destination afterall. The theme is simple but it lands impactfully. We end up spending so much time grieving the plans that didn’t work out, and Valmonte points out that those “wrong turns” are usually what shape you the most. It’s comforting and warm.

Go give it a spin, and if it moves you the way it moved me, share it, cover it, make it yours. Something tells me Valmonte would love that.
