Segana's album "Midnight Masquerade" is the perfect mix of intriguing themes, and fun synth-pop music.
Segana is a synth-pop duo consisting of Derrick Attwood, and Josh Paltoo based in Sydney, Australia. Both dabble in various genres like R&B, rock and roll, hiphop, alt-pop, and more. Their music is mixes catchy tunes with electronic beats that gel well with most genres.
Segana describe their music as "bold and eccentric", creating songs that the listeners can connect to. Their new album "Midnight Masquerade" is out now. It's a ten-track album dominated by dark, synth-pop vibe, with the major themes being desire, attraction, escapism and disguise.
The album shifts between high-energy tracks and romantic songs, as well as genres. It has alt-pop, dark-pop songs as well as good indie tunes.

The first track is "Earth to Mercury." It provides a very energetic opening to the album. The song, with classic pop vibes, speaks of ambition, the lyrics creating and imagery of fire, and constant momentum. Momentum is exactly what this song feels like with its lively beats accompanied by carefree guitar riffs.
"How Could They Know" follows with its mysterious lyricism. The song deals with danger, secrecy, survival, all while being rhythmic. Around the 2:34 mark, electronic voices are incorporated, adding to the feeling of "danger", creating a break from the normalcy of the song.
"Swingin Sixties" is exactly what it sounds like, retro, fun, rebellious. The old melodies combined with newer techniques gives it a freshness adding to the theme of rebellion from the song.
The fourth track is a slower love track called "You're the One." Centered around themes of devotion and a long-lasting connection, this one is for the hopeless romantics. The soft, sincere lyrics paired with R&B-like tunes made me want to sway to the music. This one was definitely my personal favorite.
Next in line is "Dancing in the Rain", another romantic number, but a bit more upbeat, more passionate. I think there was saxophone playing in the background, but surprisingly that isn't the highlight in this one. The artists have added rain and storm sounds in the background, adding to the experience of listening to an emotionally intense song.

Next is "To Be a Believer". This is a fun one, all about attraction, confidence, and vulnerability. It certainly made me bob my head along. The song has very "high-school life" quality with a coach's whistle going on in the background, the rhythmic clap-like beats making you feel like clapping yourself. This is that one song playing in the beginning of a coming-of-age movies.
The title track of the album, "Midnight Masquerade", used metaphors to speak of escapism. It feels dark, sensual, mysterious as it speaks of "temptations". It has a very R&B quality to it, and the guitar riffs just add to that magic. The chorus is such a earworm, I replayed that part over and over again. The song slows down around the 1:16 minute mark after the chorus before it picks up the original pace again. This one is truly addictive, manifesting its vibe through the music.
The ninth track, "Believe", is slower as compared to others, more indie in nature. With introspective lyrics that speak of dealing with self-doubt, and guilt, the song takes a softer approach with the beats as well. Vocals are definitely in the forefront as the melody takes up the supporting role, which is exactly the kind of approach needed for such a song.
And finally, we have "Cherry Crush", ending the album on a playful note. It's upbeat, poppy with a catchy hook.
