Mogipbob's "Anything but Me" Is the Most Fun I've Had With a Record in a While!

Okay so, Mogipbob is an artist based out of Hythe, Alberta. He works on Folk? Sure. Blues? A bit. Absurdist comedy about the eternal dress code in the afterlife? Also yes, weirdly. His new album, "Anything but Me" consists of sixteen original songs, all human-written (AI handles some of the production side, but the ideas, the jokes, the characters, that's all him). This album earns its laughs AND its tender moments, and that's an incredible balance to achieve.

Man with glasses in a black shirt sits at a table, hands clasped, against a warm blurred indoor background.

The album opens with "Set-Back Out Back" and this one hooked me immediately. There's even a line about dents and rust being "battle scars that earned our trust" that just lands so well. Then comes "Hell's Bell Bottoms" and I need you to hear me out on this one. The entire premise is that hell has a mandatory flared-trousers dress code. It is funny, it has a great groove underneath it, and it all works well. One of my favourites on the whole album without a doubt.

"Walking Bass", on the surface is a tribute to the unsung rhythm section. Depending on where you're at in life, it'll mean something different to you. "As Is Where Is" is an auction disaster story and it's perfect. You go to a yard sale, you accidentally wave at a friend at the exact wrong moment, and now you own a V8 with a dragging muffler, a leaky radiator, and a passenger door that's just... not happening. The best bit is the ending. You'll have to listen to it yourself to believe my words.

"Some Things Never Change" is the album being quite lovely. This is the one that might make someone cry at a family BBQ and nobody will be embarrassed about it. If "Hell's Bell Bottoms" is the comedy MVP of side one, "Modern Person, Ancient Solutions" takes it on side two. Our protagonist pays for WiFi by telegraph, receives pigeon texts, warms his TV dinner by the fireplace, practices lute in the evenings, and sleeps on a stone bed.

Rural sunset scene with a man leaning on a pickup beside a dog at a roadside garage; text reads MOGIPBOB, Anything But Me.

"Solid as Metal" is a mechanic-shop story with a killer punchline. Every time a problem comes in dodgy engine, grinding transmission, whatever the diagnosis is always the same. Warm, bluesy and the one I kept going back to. "First Degree, Second Decree" goes full classic-rock drama. Honestly, a good change of pace mid-album. "The Fleas of Hercules" is just a tall tale delivered with full conviction. It presents itself as established historical fact and I respect it enormously! "Impartial Marshal" is more gentler but one of the more rewarding listens whilst "Sunday Drive" shifts gears a bit. Stumbling across a yard sale, a crooked café sign and homemade pie. "Livery Delivery" is a frontier-era entrepreneur story. Classic early-adopter energy, just set in the 1800s. The swagger of that chorus is damn infectious!

"Umpire Vampire" is the other comedy centrepiece and honestly competes with "Hell's Bell Bottoms" for the top spot as well! "The stakes climb" as a double meaning. Brilliant. Top-tier ridiculous! "The Old Me Was the Young Me" is a bit of a gut-punch if you're old enough for it to land. Looking back at a version of yourself who drove two days straight, never thought about consequences, assumed there was always more time!

"It's the Little Things That Matter Most" is THE best song of the record, I believe. It's just an inventory of small kindnesses. Like, a porch light left on, someone remembering something you mentioned weeks ago, the bill coming in a little less than expected. And then "Anything but Me" closes it out. The most direct, personal track on the album about the years spent reshaping yourself for other people's approval and the particular relief of finally just... stopping.
