Beat the Drum, a London-based duo, are here with their latest single 'Try a Little Bit Harder'. While this track was originally meant to be a fast-paced song, it eventually evolved into a slower jazz number blending nu-jazz, electronica and trip-hop genres.

'Try a Little Bit Harder' starts slow with a piano melody that pulls you in with some muted beats. I am not sure what the technical terms for it are, but it sounds more like someone gently tapping something with their hands instead of drums. While you're settling in with that texture, the sax kicks in. That blend of rhythm and soft tune makes this song feel lighter. The vocals have that airy quality that we all associate with jazz. It's less of a performance, and more like a personal experience, a direct bond to the music.

The lyrics about working harder and still witnessing the debts growing larger makes me think of Sisyphus, ending up rolling the boulder of earning uphill, and still ending up broke by the end of the month. Too real, too relatable. Yet the song never feels "frustrating", just steady determination to try harder despite knowing we're trapped in a system that does not seem to be working in our favour.
