Owen Young’s 'These Painted Flowers' EP delivers a sincere conclusion to the Muddy River project, which began in 2020. Born out of the stillness of the pandemic and the chaos that followed, each track in the EP captures a distinct moment in the chaos-filled landscape and offers a fitting farewell to a journey that has been four years in the making.

The EP kicks off with the track, 'It Seems So Simple,' a tender exploration into vulnerability. The song taps into the universal experience of second-guessing everything in a relationship. The chorus with sheer honesty feels both deeply personal and wraps you in its bittersweet warmth.

'If I Drove Down' is a haunting track about what could have been. That constant itch to turn back time and wish you’d done things differently. The track doesn’t try too hard yet somehow manages to make it one of the most heart-wrenching from the album.

'Keepin’ Bad Company,' featuring Tia McGraff, switches to a more blues-y tone. The back-and-forth duet between Owen and Tia feels like the dialogue we have with ourselves when we know we deserve better but keep repeating the same mistakes.

'Lightning Don’t Strike Twice' feels like a nostalgic nod to what we wish we could change. A song that speaks to lost chances and cherishing the people you love while they’re still around. It nudges you to snap out of your daily rush of life and to slow down for what matters.

Up next, we have the titular track, 'These Painted Flowers,' which might just be the crown jewel of the EP. With its striking narrative about trying to hold on to a faded love, the song feels both heartbreaking and strangely hopeful. The line, “I couldn’t find enough shades of blue, so I left the empty canvas out by an open window,” conveys the pain of holding on to something that’s slipping away.

Beaux Young’s rendition of 'Wayfaring Stranger' offers a hauntingly beautiful interlude. It serves as a touching nod to the timeless nature of the EP’s themes. Beaux’s ethereal voice paired with a sparse production creates a moment of quiet reflection, grounding the listener before the album’s epilogue. It’s the only track not originally written for the Muddy River project, yet it fits perfectly by offering a sense of closure and connection to something larger.

'Epilogue' brings the album to a full circle by acknowledging the introspective journey that Muddy River has been. The track suggests a sense of liberation, signaling the artist’s readiness to embrace new beginnings.

'These Painted Flowers' is for those late-night thinkers, the “what if” dwellers, and anyone who’s ever tried to make peace with their past. Owen Young’s ability to weave deeply personal stories with universal truths makes this EP a standout.

This EP is a gem in terms of storytelling. Whether you’ve been following the Muddy River journey since the beginning or are discovering it for the first time, 'These Painted Flowers' will provide an experience that will last long after the last few seconds fade.
