Michael Cohen Lets the River Carry Him and Takes You With Him on "River of Secrets"

If you haven't crossed paths with this Miami and D.C.-based singer-songwriter yet, let me be the one to introduce you.

Michael Cohen is the type of musician who creates worlds in just one album, and his soon-to-be-released first album, "Living in Dadeland," is going to be a world to dive into! It's a concept record born out of a pandemic-era relocation, a powerful romance, and an equally gutting heartbreak.

"River of Secrets" is designed around a simple idea: that the things we keep hidden from the people we love eventually conspire against us. And that sometimes, we're hiding things even from ourselves. Cohen drew from Jungian psychology while writing it, particularly the idea that suggests the unexplored fears haunt us despite our efforts to overcome them.

Guitarist Riccardo Mazzaglia's acoustic work layers beautifully across the production, too. Cohen ran the mastering through eight rounds with engineer Alan Douches (who has worked with Sufjan Stevens), which tells you everything about how much he cared about nailing this single. My personal favourite moment is the shift from "I" to "we" mid-song. Such a clever shift, where all our secrets have conspired to tell us lies, because that's when the song truly admits it was never just about one person!
