Taylor Swift, an American singer-songwriter, is not only known for her songwriting skills but also for the clues and hidden messages from her life that she leaves for her fans to find. Swift isn't just an artist but a remarkable influence on several other artists in the industry and with a whole generation of a loyal fanbase. She might have been type-casted as a romance/breakup songwriter, but her songs are so much more than that.

Taylor's Midnight Album focuses on the emotions that would keep her up at night; Midnight Rain puts forth the amalgamation of emotions encompassing loneliness, regret, and doubts about the past and the future. The beats feel like a self-soothing hug; the music is slow and consoling but not somber enough to cause a teary reaction. The lyrics make you think of those times when you had to choose the goals you wanted to achieve and lost something in the process. Thinking of the ‘what ifs’ and wondering if you made the right choice – that is what this song embodies. The opening of the song with Taylor’s voice being artificially modified is a nice experiment on her part that somehow fits the vibe of the song, however, the rest of the vocals did not hit the mark this time.
